UPDATE 7-6-09

Diesel is measuring up! He and owner Tina Lawson have been making NICE runs!!! Events include Jackpots and Open Rodeos. This colt works nice EVERY time. No battles, issues or vices.

These Oh Watta Boys seem to be consistantly nice horses. Proof of the quality and versatility of theses horses also include Ashlynn an 8 year old (city girl turned country) who now loves riding Deisel at home. As a 4 year old who is to be a futurity prospect Deisel rides like a true gentleman showing his good nature and willingness to please.

Diesel is running NICE 1 & 2 D Times. Recently at the Dist. 05 race in Harra Ok he ran the FASTEST incentive time of the day!!!

We at MD Spur Barrel Horses look at each horse individually.

Pediagree is a factor; however, we have learned through experience that you cannot ride horses’ papers. Although breeding can often give insight into what might be possible and factually gives reference to the ancestors’ history, breeding is no guarantee. It has also been proven that a horse does not know their structural, conformational, or physical limitations.

Many times we find it’s what is on the inside that makes a barrel horse.

Heart and try are highly important factor’s in the success of a barrel horse.

One of the key factors in making and maintaining a successful barrel horse is the right foundational training. MD Spur Barrel Horses has the proven ability to give your horse the best foundation for success.

Rebel is a 1/2 brother to DHR Perks Leo Lynx “Deisel” we usually don’t take stallions here at MD Spur Barrel Horses but We REALLY like the Oh Whatta Boy babies and Rebel is an exceptional stallion. He is no different than having another gelding around.

Rebel is a kind, gentle, and willing colt. He is showing many of the same qualities as his half brother. These horses have GREAT minds and a willingness to please that makes training them a pleasure. He will be started on barrels by Debbie Caywood and prepared for a bright future!

Frosty Biankas 5 yr old AQHA Mare:

Zema began training with MD Spur Barrel Horses in 2009. She is owned by Monica McClung, daughter of Robert McClung and Debi Jacobs of May, Ok.

This mare was started intially by Monica. She went home late summer in 2009 and returned for a tune up with Debbie Caywood at MD Spur Barrel Horses only 30 days prior to the 2009 BFA World Championships in Oklahoma City. Monica was unable to pilot Zema at OKC due to other obligations so a rider change was made and Debbie Caywood took the drivers seat for the futurity runs.

The 1st go of the futurity was just Zema’s 3rd time in competion so we were pleased with her placing nicely in the 2D during the first go when she eased a nice 16.5 run.

Zema shaved more than a tenth off her 2nd Go time to run a 16.4. Considering the lack of hauling and competition experiance Zema’s performance was pleasing to both rider/trainer Debbie Caywood and owners as well.

Zema will remain with us for a little longer so that we can help her gain the hauling and competion experiance she needs to be a strong competitor in 2010.

UPDATE: Jan. 4, 2010:

Jan. 1 & 2, 2010 - Stephenville, TX -

Zema runs a nice 3D time crusing a 16.1 after nearly 2 weeks off, 3 rides, and no home work on her Friday run at the Lonestar arena New Years Day race.

Zema runs another 3D time struggleing a little in the ground and added speed to be a 16.4 at the Lonestar arena Tribute to Booger Barter Race.

Numerous times he and Tina have clocked 1 & 2D times. Most recently he LOPED to the 1st in the Short round at the BBR Finals to be a 16.116!!!! Only a few weeks prior to that Debbie Caywood climed back in the saddle at Choctaw, Ok to WIN the barrel race EASILY!

This colt could TRULEY be a SUPERSTAR!!!!

This is an OUTSTANDING young horse! Diesel recieved an excellent foundation from the breeder Delvin Buhr of Nebraska. He has been in training with MD Spur Barrel Horses, LLC. off and on over the last few months. We have strived to bring him along slow and correct. On 12-6-08 he made his 1st trip to town. He easily drew a 3D check the FIRST time out! Not only was this the first entry on him, but also the only time away from home while in training. He showed signs that he was ready for the task and proved him self worthy! Again on 12-14-08 he eased himself into another 3D check.

This horse is excellent minded, willing and able! HE WILL MAKE AN OUTSTANDING 2009 futurity enterant.

Elman’s Best aka “Doc Grey”  placed 3rd  out of nearly 900 head with a 15.399 at  the Lone Star Arena in Stephenville, Tx on June 26th, 2008 - Also, July 1st, 2008 at their WPRA Rodeo debuet they are top contenders running a nice 17.6 at Springdale, Ar. Elmans Best & Sandy Weathers run the fastest time of the weekend at the NBHA Super Show in Tulsa on May 30, 2008!!! 15.322 . Check out the article in this months issue of the Barrel Horse News on page 90. (Photo on page 88) Watch their Sunday run, bottom of the ground on the last day, they still win 6th with a 15.629.  Already over $10,000 in winnings in 2008. Doc was started on barrels as a 6 yr old by MD Spur Barrel Horses! Mary Moore  Fargo, Ok - Watch Me Zoom & Eddy W Goldseeker Hi Debbie, Wanted to give you an update on Zoomer…..he had really good run at Seiling.  He ran a 17.9….winning time was a 17.4.  I think it just shows when they get a solid foundation at the beginning of their barrel training they will hold together.  I am really really pleased with him.   So again…thanks for the great start on Zoomer.  I’ll keep you posted. Mary 8-7-08 Hi Debbie, I wanted to let you know how good Zoomer did over the weekend.  We went to a KPRA rodeo in Syracuse, Ks.  On Friday night he ran an 18.36, the winning time was a 17.55 and a 17.95 was last hole.  I was thrilled, that was only his 11th run!  He just goes out and hunts those barrels and his turns are so nice!   I decided to take him to some rodeos this summer and get him used to all the action….I was really not expecting that nice of a run.  You really did a nice job on him!!  It is so fun to go out and know that he is going to go out there and look for the barrels and want to turn them.  I’ll keep you posted on him…..thanks again, Mary 6-9-08 Hi Debbie, I just wanted to tell you again what a nice job you did on Zoomer.  He just went out and did it. This nice 10 year old gelding has not had his wheels hauled off! He has CONSISTANTLY run at the top of the 1 & 2D in tough Oklahoma competition. Tux is extremley consistant and RARELY hits barrels!! He has and continues to draw numerous checks and prizes at shows as follows: Central 4D D & G Productions Heartland Tours Shoout Out Productions BBR Events World Barrel Racing Events Amature Rodeos Just to mention a few! Tux is primarily ridden by owner Babby Simunek, but has also been successfully piloted by trainer Debbie Caywood and good friend Karla Oller. In 2003 I offered this little black horse for sale at an EXTREMELY low price. My partner Dean Spencer passed away and his family wanted to sell ASAP. I was not sure why he didn’t sell sooner but I finally talked Babby into giving him a shot. At the time Babby’s main mount was a big buckskin ranch horse that I trained a few years earlier. Charley proved everyone wrong when he stepped up and made a great barrel horse. Because of Tux’s small size it was a leap of faith for Mrs. Simunek. It proved to be the best investment and act of faith she could have made. This team has had awsome success in the barrel racing scene over the past few years! They are consistant in bringing home nice 1 and 2D checks. As well as a saddle, buckle and numerous other nice prizes not to memtion the enjoyment and satisfaction to a rider who had been out of barrel racing for more than 20 years! Thank you Babby for your trust in me as both a friend and trainer. I can’t wait to get started on your Bully baby and Wild Willy (a full brother to Tivoli Moon).

Te was purchased for a youth rider in 2009, this pair is not a fit so he is being offered for sale now by owner. Te is a push style horse that runs a nice honest pattern and has the ability to be a 1 & 2D horse. His past accomplishments can be googled showing his credentials prior to his current owner.

Te requires light maintenance which was not fully understood at the time of purchase by his current owner. With proper care and management this should not hinder his future ability. This is REALLY a nice horse that needs a chance. Te is absolutley GENTLE and WILLING, Well Started and is a FINISHED horse. He is currently being legged up and prepared for competition.

About me

Thank you for visiting the official website of MD Spur Barrel Horses.
A little history:
I’d like to share with you my back ground. I have not come from a long line of rodeo families or successful equine ranchers. I have worked hard to educate myself and grow myself into the trainer I am today because I truly love horses and the sport of barrel racing. I believe beyond a shadow of any doubt that God was gracious enough to bless me with a gift. To be able to successfully ride and train barrel horses is something that I am unwilling to take for granted and am thankful for each and everyday. The opportunity to live my dream is by the grace and goodness of my heavenly father.
I have been on horse back most all of my life. I believe my mother sealed my fate even before birth, as she was herself a horse nut and was on horse back just 3 days prior to my birth. Once I got my feet on the ground I was on a horse in some way shape or form. I showed in 4-H shows in many different events of the western nature and moved to hunter jumpers before high school. Although I enjoyed the horses no matter what discipline I was involved in, I ALWAYS dreamed of barrel racing. I couldn’t wait for the chance to be involved in Rodeos, Playdays and Barrel Races. It wasn’t until late in my high school days that I got a small taste of my dream. I even “trained” my first barrel horse before graduating high school. I stress the quote trained due to the fact that I was at that time completely UNEDUCATED in the field of barrel horse training. Fortunately Nadie was a horse that had a lot of natural talent and she survived the crash coarse / trial and error methods I used then ad laugh about now. Nadir Grass went on with my kid sister Sandy Nelson Weathers to a successful high school rodeo and armature rodeo career. She was a competitor with the likes of Kim West’s great paint gelding who competed in the same circle at the time and took Kim to the NFR.
Once I left home and married I became much more involved in barrel racing. Again taking a shot at training my own barrel horse. Char Grass Blaze was a daughter of Nadie and was even more easy to train than her mother. Charley as a 3 year old ran the 5th fastest time right behind her mama at the Canton, Ok open rodeo, which in that day was a pretty tough rodeo in our area. I remember being scolded by a dear friend, Karla Oller, for entering such a nice young horse at such a young age and blowing the chance for her to compete as a futurity horse. Well, I was totally ignorant at that time of futurities and anything that had to do with them. Oops!!!
That is the short version of where it all started. It isn’t all shiny and legendary, but that’s it.
About the TRAINING:
There are a lot of fancy ways to describe training barrel horses, but here is how I put it…
Just as with people God gives horses different talents, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, personalities and desires. It is up to us as riders, trainers and owners to shape them into the BEST version of themselves.
Horses learn by feel thru repition so each and every time we come into contact with them, whether that be on the ground or on their back, they will learn something from us and we should learn from them.
For me training a barrel horse is greatly about feel. Because we can’t really demonstrate visually to a horse how to run to, shape, rate and turn a barrel, as to a horse these are merely tasks. We have to reptiously through feel and contact show them how to successfully complete each task. They have to know where, when, how, and why to complete each task using themselves in a manner best suited for the physical and mental make up God gave them.
It is our job to communicate clearly, again through feel and contact, when it is right and when it is wrong. Once the horse gains clear confidence in what is expected of them it is then and only then that they can become the best version of themselves as a barrel horse.

SHAWNE EASY BUG ask “J.R.” This horse will forever own a piece of my heart!

UPDATE 8-22-09

JR has found his new life time home!!!! Congrats to Glenn & Kathy Gray of Oklahoma City, Ok on your  recent blessing. JR is truely a gift and a blessing!

Further more on their 1st run together they eased a top 2D time at Shawnee, Ok ABRA Finals!!

WAY TO GO!!!!!!

I am so blessed to have had the privelage of riding, owning, competing on and truely being loved by this wonderful horse SHAWNE EASY BUG. He is the definition of TALENT, ABILITY, and most importantly HEART!

He has blessed me in so many ways. The sale of this horse is bitter sweet and he will be greatly missed. I am not ashamed to say that my heart aches without him.

I pray that he will continue to be a blessing to his new owners and that they too will see, experiance, and appreciate the wonderful qualities he possess. I wish them success and look forward to seeing him achieve the great things he is so capeable of.

Shawne Easy Bug turns in yet another respectable 1D run! After falling completley down on his belly at the first barrel, HE STILL RUNS A 15.8 to be in the 1D! Fastest time run on 11-2-08 was a 15.427.

There is no doubt this horse has the heart to be a WINNER!

JR doesn’t just win respect, He earns it!

Shawne Easy Bug runs a smokin 15.270 at NBHA District 05 Finals in Shawnee, Ok on 11-1-08. Would have won it handily, but a slip leaveing the 2nd caused him to drag  it down.

This horse just keeps getting better!!!
